Hello parents/guardians!
Thank you to all of you who have scheduled your student’s IGP meeting! If you have already done so, there is no need to schedule another meeting. It is on my calendar, and I look forward to meeting with you soon.
If you have not already scheduled your students IGP meeting, please use this link to do so: https://mswood8thgradeigp.youcanbook.me/
All 8th graders are required by state law to have an IGP meeting and it is highly encouraged that parents/guardians attend the meetings to get important information about their students transition to high school and to provide valuable input on their student’s future plans. Students whose parents/guardians do not schedule their IGP meetings will meet with the school counselor individually for their meeting beginning March 1st. Please see the attached documents for more information.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you,
Jessica Wood, M.Ed.

Message from Katie Shaw, NMS Lead Science Teacher/Sponsor for the Agrigultural Science Lab
Students in the sixth and seventh grades will participate in the South Carolina Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom Mobile Ag Lab today, tomorrow, and Friday. This experience was funded by the Newberry County Farm Bureau Federation and Duke Energy Foundation. This is an educational experience that brings the farm to school. Students who visit the lab will learn about important South Carolina commodities and how many of them go from the field to their plate. The lessons are aligned to state learning standards, so students are able to apply math, science, English, and social studies principles to agriculture. Students will see first-hand the importance of agriculture in providing food, fuel, and fiber.
This week our student's lesson will be Soy Crayons. In this lesson, the students will gain knowledge about the importance and uses for soybeans. The students will actively participate in an interactive lesson using the Nearpod platform and will also participate in a hands-on lab. The student will learn about all the uses of soybeans and how to make crayons out of soy wax.
Standards:
6-LS1-1: Conduct investigations to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells.
7-LS1-7: Develop a model to describe how food molecules in plants and animals are rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.
